Breaking News: Two stabbed in attempted hijack over Melbourne. The hijacker attacked them with "two small wooden stakes". Great. So much for knitting on the 20-hour trip to Chicago.

i hate to break it to you Kris, but in today's climate, even without the small-wooden-stakes-hijackers, they probably wouldn't've allowed your knitting needles on board... i used to bring my x-stitch, but now wouldn't be suprised if they confiscated the tiny needle!

i'm pretty sure that knitting needles (esp bamboo) have been cleared for carry-on luggage for a while now.

dang that sucks, kris. someone should invent telescoping knitting needles that (1) can collapse for more efficient storage and (2) wouldn't be effective as a weapon (see aforementioned collapsing action).

I've successfully brought (bamboo) knitting needles on a plane in the last few months, but the woman I sat next to was surprised they weren't confiscated. Since I didn't want to risk that happening I checked them on my last flight. An idea I've heard, however, is to bring your knitting in your carry-on in a self-addressed, stamped envelope, so that if you can't carry them on-board, you can drop them in the mail.

That's what I heard too, Tricia, except there's no post office once you get past Security in Sydney airport. Oh well, I should be busy with the new Harry Potter anyway so the time won't be a total loss...

I'm with you on the Harry Potter thing! I've pre-ordered my copy of The Order Of the Phoenix - due out on June 21, and we fly out on June 25. :o)

Does it make me an even bigger geek if I'm taking the 21st off work? I have nooooo ability to wait. I'm just counting it as a little belated birthday present to me. :)

The strange thing that they didn't mention about this incident was that it was the Melbourne to Sunnydale flight....

yeah, i was wondering how long it would take for someone to start throwing around the buffy references.

No, Jenny, what makes you a bigger geek is that you're going to be wearing a six-foot Gryffindor scarf in the middle of June... right? :)

You know it! And everyone else will be green with envy!
