It’s time to start the Sixth Annual web-goddess Oscar Contest, folks! Here’s how it works: Just go the entry form and make your picks for the dozen award categories (and tie-breaker!). Whoever gets the most right wins a fabulous, one-of-a-kind sock monkey creation. After much deliberation, there really was only one choice this year: a Striking Writer Monkey. He’s union and proud, dammit! (And he’ll probably get the Oscar ceremony cancelled anyway.) He’s also kind of a hipster, for some reason. He features hand-knitted Converse All-Stars (which also function as baby booties, if you have a baby) and chunky black glasses (made out of Fimo). This year’s monkey reminds me of David Cross (Tobias from Arrested Development). I think it is those glasses.

So, Jeff and I go to an Oscar party every year where we’re supposed to “dress up.” Everyone else dresses in formal/cocktail attire; we dress as movie characters. This is at least the second (maybe third) time our planned costumes match the sock monkey’s. We were gay cowboys two years ago. While I was considering a Juno inspired costume this year (pregnant Trish, running-gear-clad Jeff), writers-striking was much more fun and conversation provoking.
Anyway, I really want to WIN that sock monkey this year!

I haven’t seen any of the nominated films — the price of living in New Zealand, where many of them haven’t even made it to theaters yet — so I scientifrandomly chose the first title/name listed in each category. But I’m rooting for the Coen brothers, Dude.
