Being basically a giant means that dresses that are normal length on others are a bit, uh, brief on me. So for #frocktober day 5 I paired my beautiful ruffly @made590 Vera dress (in @riflepaperco fabric!) with a pair of shorts. Today I learned that there are few early signs of ovarian cancer, and in some cases it can be asymptomatic until it advances to the later stages. Today’s fact is that if ovarian cancer is detected in the earliest stages, a 90% chance of survival is possible – that’s why the @ocrf are funding projects for early detection tests. It’s really hot in Sydney, so #frocktober Day 3 is a self-made Seamwork Moneta dress in a Hawaiian print. Today’s fact is that there is NO early detection test for ovarian cancer — a pap/cervical smear does not detect it! As much as I prefer trains, living in Sydney and having an APAC-focused job means a fair bit of airplane travel. Recent I bought my first pair of compression socks. I tell myself they are TACTICAL and not dowdy, thank you very much… 🧦

It’s been 5 years since my last #frocktober – far too long! I’m looking forward to pulling my dresses out of storage and seeing what sparks joy (and still fits!). Today was blisteringly hot in Sydney, so I started the month off with a ruffly floral sundress. 👗

I learned about the Dutch East Indies in school, but mostly in relation to Columbus and his “discovery” of America. It’s another thing entirely to actually visit them and learn about the history of these islands. I took the opportunity on my last morning here to see Jakarta on a private tour. My guide Nanda showed me Merdeka Square with the Indonesia National Monument (including the 50+ dioramas showing ID history), Jakarta Cathedral, Istiqlal Mosque (so gorgeous I’ll do a whole separate post for it), the Old Town (including the Town Hall of Batavia), a puppet studio (with traditional wayang puppets), and Sunda Kelapa Harbour. It was all fascinating, and I’m so glad I went! 🇮🇩
The Istiqlal Mosque is the largest mosque in SE Asia. It’s very modern, featuring only two materials – local marble and stainless steel. I *loved * it. I don’t normally get this artsy with my photos, but every angle in this space was breathtaking. 🕌

Right at the end of Cloud Day Indonesia, this guy stopped me to ask about my AWS dress. While we were chatting, I noticed the company name on his badge. “Oh cool!” I said. “Bespin, from Star Wars! Cloud City!” His face lit up, and he marched me over to his booth to gift me some very special swag – a custom umbrella that lights up like a lightsaber in 7 different colours! 😍☂️ Sometimes it pays to be a geek…
