  • Retrenched!

So that’s the big news around here. Made redundant. Laid off. But “retrenched” sounds so much better, don’t you think? I’m going back to the trenches. It’s cool; I was actually quite relieved when they told me, and I wasn’t really surprised either. We didn’t get a couple jobs that had been planned, and there hasn’t been much for me to do in terms of my actual job title (Senior Business Analyst). So I spent the past several weeks doing QA, writing documentation, and worrying about when the axe would fall. Turns out it was this past Friday. But knowing is always better than not knowing, and I feel as if a stressful weight has been lifted. I’d already been sending out my CV to recruiters, and I’ve had a chat with someone at my DREAM JOB (which I’m not going to tell you about because it’ll totally jinx it). But I’m always up for new leads and opportunities. Here’s my LinkedIn page if you want to have a look. I’m obviously interested in Business Analyst roles, but preferably I’d like to get into Product Management if I can. Thanks in advance for tips and commiseration!

The Snook actually said to me: “They should have waited till next week. Then you could have a trophy for “Laid off on birthday” to go next to your “Laid off at Christmas” one.” BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

  • Please reconsider the use of the term “butthurt” – MetaTalk

Please reconsider the use of the term “butthurt” – MetaTalk – Fascinating discussion. Personally, I hate that phrase and I definitely associate it with gamer culture (and their misogynistic usage of “rape”). This is possibly because the first person I ever heard use it was a bully I used to work with who also called things “gay” and thought goatse* references were the height of humour. It’s an ugly word. However, I have seen it in other contexts, most incongruously over on some Ravelry forums. The meaning has been watered down of course, but it still seems to be favoured by gleeful trolls. I would be happy to see it used less on the Internet.

    * If you don’t know what that is, I don’t recommend googling it. It was a really offensive picture and a lot of COOL INTERNET BROS thought tricking people into viewing it was the height of humour.

Was really great to run into @AusVintageGrrl and @thisismywww at Broadway with their little fella!

@drkknits Should’ve asked me! We have heaps we could have lent you.

The Self-Replicating Mittens pattern is now live: http://t.co/m8jvdvNv8X. Knitters, please let me know if you spot any obvious errors!

@drkknits It’s less about that and more about having them from going on trips there!

Time for QI and cocktails. We’re sophisticated.

@mrs_sockvictim I have slow-roasted pork belly in my house RIGHT NOW.

@GrumpyDerp @mseager @clepetit @virtualwolf Now half of Twitter is going to have nightmares…

@merrinmez @mrs_sockvictim Undue influence would have been mentioning the homemade onion jam seemed alongside it… 🙂

@merrinmez @mrs_sockvictim I think she means she’s not a real judge. I’m withholding pork products til I see something on letterhead.

@mrs_sockvictim @drkknits @merrinmez There is ALWAYS. More. Pork.

@randomknits @RoseRed_Shoes I nearly bought a pair of hot pink headphones at Costco today. I didn’t need them, but they were SO PRETTY.

@randomknits @RoseRed_Shoes They also have $20 pink jersey wrap dresses, but they didn’t suit me.

@randomknits @RoseRed_Shoes (I am the person who tries on clothes in the middle of Costco over their existing clothes.)

@aimee_maree You really can’t extrapolate from Austin to the US at the best of times, much less when SxSW is on.

@aimee_maree I wasn’t talking about Internet. I was referring to the dumb question about your nose!

THE 10-YEAR HOODIE: Built for Life, Backed for a Decade! by Jake Bronstein – Kickstarter – I am really, really tempted to back this. I hate planned obsolescence. I love the idea of somebody sourcing and manufacturing something that they actually intend to LAST. But at the same time – this is some serious hipster Portlandia territory, no? A frickin’ HOODIE?

Guess who just got laid off? Beer time! If you know of BA or Prod Mgr opportunities, let me know. http://t.co/TtBW8SMy6s

@neil_killick Yeah, partner is based here. Can’t easily move!

Thanks everybody! I can explain in person, but this is A) not a surprise and B) actually kind of a relief. Knowing is better than not!

THANK YOU to everyone who has sent sympathy and potential job leads. I feel really lucky. You’re all The Best.

@henrytapia I don’t want to annoy anybody… but my time frame has definitely moved up. Atlassian still my #1 choice tho!

Hm. Lots of beers on empty stomach is now leading to headache. Go to bed or drink more beer?

@eileenDCoE I did have food, so my belly is full now. 🙂

    @eobeara Should’ve never asked an Irishman! 🙂

@RoseRed_Shoes @drkknits I ate half a cow and a plate full of roasted beets, like a good cavewoman.

    @trpurcell That sounds familiar… 🙂

@clepetit @vrenjith I had a full steak dinner after the beers, and that may have been a mistake. BLEURGH.

A little disappointed they didn’t wait one more week so I could be made redundant on my BIRTHDAY. I’d get extra sympathy beers for that one!

@vrenjith I am home! I was at least smart about that. Survival Brain kicked in: Stop beer. Get on bus. Get away from Irish people at pub…

@redambition @drkknits NO. I am never drinking again. *clutches head and moans*

@crumpet @henrytapia Small world! Don’t think I’ve met @jpoh in person, but we may have crossed paths.

My head feels better. The key appears to be to NOT MOVE IT EVER.

@drstip Yes! Both of them work. “Self-Replicating Mittens”, because they point to the pattern (which I wrote).

@liedra For now it’s a 404. But tomorrow, it will be the actual mitten pattern (which I wrote). Hence “Self-Replicating Mittens”. 🙂

@drkknits We don’t really do the whole “big choc egg with a gift” thing. That’s what I took last time. Definitely Tim Tams too!

@drkknits You should focus on maximising the space on your suitcase for bring back Reese’s Peanut Butter Easter Eggs.

@drkknits And if you bring any goddamn Peeps, so help me god, I will sit in your driveway and play Taylor Swift all day long loudly.

@drkknits Yeah, they get the creme eggs. I always hated em, but they’re everywhere.

@drkknits They don’t have any of the bars that you get in a box of Celebrations, I think, so anything related would be a novelty.

I’m awake. I haven’t lifted my head yet. Dreading it.

@drkknits Rib. I actually ended up sewing the sides of mine together in the middle because of how cold air would get in around my fingers.
