Another second place trivia finish… but I’m unhappy with my own performance. As the American, I’m expected to get pretty much all the U.S. questions. Going into the second round tonight, we were trailing considerably and needed to make up ground. The first question: “Name the five baseball players to hit more than 60 home runs in a season.” Everybody turned to me. I said triumphantly, “Sammy Sosa, Mark McGuire, Barry Bonds, Babe Ruth, and… Oh God. That guy. The one that got the death threats and his hair fell out. DEAR GOD, WHAT WAS HIS NAME?” And there I was stuck for the next thirty minutes. I agonized. I paced. I tore my hair out. I could not dredge that name up from my brain. I kept thinking “Roger”, but for the life of me I couldn’t recall his last name. I seriously almost threw up I was so pissed off.

I did manage to redeem myself slightly though, by knowing who says the words, “Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives.” So maybe I’m not completely useless.

  1. You have to see the HBO movie 61*. That’s right, I’m such a nerd I included the *. It’s about the season Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris competed for everything. Because of this movie, I now love Thomas Jane. And Barry Pepper is Roger Maris. In fact, we have the DVD. It’s on the shelf right between Carrie and Spaceballs. 🙂

  2. hey, who says that days of our lives thing? we won our pub quiz last night (two in a row for us)… clinched it by knowing the final jeopardy question of – who was the only bachelor president? it was great b/c 3/5 people on our team knew the answer, but then only one other team got it right.

hey – what day of the week is yours on? i realized when i was up in san fran a few weeks ago that every city that i’ve been to a pub quiz in (sf, chicago, la, london, seattle) has had them on tuesday. must be international trivia night…

  3. Nah, here it’s all over. The one at the Nag’s we took you to is Wednesday, and the one we go to is Thursday. They stagger them here.

The Days of Our Lives thing is Macdonald Carey, who played Dr. Horton. Hmm… No idea on the bachelor president. Is it somebody random like William McKinley or something?

  4. How about Taft? Or was he the one who got married in the White House?

  5. Unless there are a lot of closet Aussie baseball fans out there, it seems like a weird question to ask at an Australian quiz night anyway… I can’t think of any Aussies of my acquaintance who could come up with even one of the names, let alone five.

  6. Well, this is a tough quiz, which is why we like it. It’s no fun if everybody knows all the answers. I think it’s a syndicated trivia quiz. There aren’t just American questions. They do a lot of world geography stuff too. It’s just that I’m only very good at the occasional US question. 🙂
