Graffitists vs. Artists

Hmm. I was reading the SMH this morning at home over breakfast, and I came upon this article about two people who drowned in a storm drain yesterday. I remember being a little surprised that the title on the SMH home page was “Artists drown in drain,” especially as the “artists” in question were spray painting graffiti in a drain. I half-expected the paper to call them vandals. Anyway, it’s two hours later now and it looks like they’ve changed it to “Graffitists drown in drain.” (Archived here for posterity.) I wonder if they had some complaints or something.

  1. We both noticed this in the paper edition and nearly spat our breakfasts. The question was asked “If artists draw in a drain and no-one notices, is the art really there?”

  2. Now they’re saying they were urban cavers. I like how the SMH’s source makes it sound like such serious business and then also mentions that they’ve named one portion of the drain “The Bong Room.”

  3. Then there’s this other thing they’re talking about… ‘sewer-sliders’. Am I a boring old lady, or are these people mad?

  4. They’re mad. I’ve read about real urban spelunkers before, and they don’t get shit-faced drunk and carry cans of spray paint. I think it’s horrible that they died, but man, they were idiots.
