The lease is signed; the keys have been handed over. It’s officially Moving Day, yo. Well, sorta. Today I’m home packing and cleaning while the Snook finishes up at work. Then tomorrow we’ll be renting a van to drive* as much of our stuff over as possible. Saturday the movers come to get all the rest. I’m in for a busy weekend…

* Yeah, so despite the fact that I’ve been living overseas for four years, this Friday will be the first time that I’ve actually gotten behind the wheel of a vehicle outside the United States. It will also be the first time that I’ve driven on the left side of the road, the first time I’ve driven around roundabouts, and the first time I’ve driven a van in, like, eight years. (Yes, the Snook has a license. No, he doesn’t like to drive, so I’m doing it.) Wish me luck. Who’s the patron saint of motor vehicles?

  1. oooooh, i know this one. dennis leary cracked about it in his “Lock and Load” HBO special. Well, I’m not sure it’s the same thing. He talked about how “back in the day” people would have a little statue on their dashes and they’d tap it every so often , as to promote good driving…… is it Saint Christopher? Maybe?? I dunno. GOOD LUCK!!!

  2. Thanks! Although I don’t think I’ll be tapping any statues tomorrow… I have a feeling I’ll have a deathgrip on the wheel. 🙂

  3. St. Christopher is the patron saint of travellers. In Singapore, most taxi drivers have a little shrine to the god or gods of their choice on the dashboard. I reckon using their mirrors would be a better way to prevent accidents, but I guess that would take more effort.

  4. I feel so much for you right now. I hate moving w/ a passion. We have a little tradition of reading nasty porn on moving day b/w my roommates and I. It’s totally mindless and guffaw-inducing.

    I still hate moving.

  5. speaking as one who has essentially moved once a year since leaving home for college, i can vouch for the fact that moving is the worst thing ever. the only thing to do is put your head down, grind it out, and reward yourself with lots of cold beverages at the end of the day. oh, and the Snook owes you one. 😉

  6. I’ve also moved a few times in my life and it’s always so much work! Good luck and hang in there! I hope the van is an automatic. 😉

  7. Yeah, I specifically requested an automatic. I can drive stick, but with my left hand? I figure concentrate on one thing at a time. 🙂

The Snook called me out the other day on the fact that I actually secretly *like* moving. I like the opportunity to go through all my stuff and get rid of things and put them all in a new place and arrange them. It’s like I get all my cleaning and decorating impulse out in one go. Of course, I say that at the beginning of a three day move… so I’ll probably be so ready to quit on Sunday.

:::i kinda like it too, kris. shhhh:::

  9. Change your residence, change your life; better than a new haircut any day…

  10. i have to admit, i love unpacking and rearranging and all that. however, i HATE the moving of the boxes… especially with my last move. I moved from a third floor apartment to a third floor apartment. In 100+ degree heat. Sucked. I feel your pain, baby. At least I only moved a handful of stuff compared to what you and The Snook will be moving. I will think fondly of you while I sit here and watch MTV and slouch around in my skivvies.
