  • La Tartine Fruit Loaf

The Snook and I got up early yesterday to head out to the Good Living Growers’ Market in Pyrmont. It was our first visit and we were not disappointed! When we left an hour later, we were weighed down with asparagus, tomatoes, St. Agur blue cheese (soooo good) from Simon Johnson, some Bircher Muesli from Whisk and Pin, bratwurst and boudin noir (we were feeling very Steingarten) from Eumundi Smokehouse, and last but not least… a genuine La Tartine fruit loaf. (I’d have taken my own picture but this sucker didn’t last long.) For breakfast, we had lattes from Toby’s and wagyu steak sandwiches. YUM. I kept my eyes peeled for an Asian photoblogger, but it looks like we missed AugustusGloop by an hour or two. I think this may become a monthly habit!

  • Sydney Uni

Burning Koala (aka Angela and Eric) has just posted some lovely photos of Sydney University and Victoria Park. This is just a few streets over from our house and it’s one of the prettiest places on this side of Sydney.

  • Bondi Beach

Joey and his Dad are dipping their toes in the western half of the Pacific for the first time. The surf isn’t big but it’s a lovely evening…

  • Zoo fun!

Mom snaps pics of Sydney Harbour from the skyway at Taronga Zoo. It was a gorgeous day to visit the animals, and we got to meet Snookums’ family too!

  • Greek Festival, Darling Harbour

I can’t believe I finally scooped Helen! On Sunday the Snook and I walked down to Darling Harbour to check out the big Greek Festival. It was beautiful and sunny and hot and crowded. We had some food and watched some dancers. I had a great time! (The Snook was less entranced: “I’m not emo; I just hate people.” We saw that graffito once and it’s become a catchphrase.) I even took my camera…

My first stop was sweet-corn-on-a-stick. I’m not sure how Greek that is, but it was SO. GOOD. I had it with margarine and salt and pepper.

Next we stood and watched a troupe of dancers perform the song everybody was waiting for: “Zorba the Greek.”

    Zorba

Time for more food! We joined the extremely disorganized queue and waited… and waited…

    Waiting

We’d decided against the loukoumades, which were like deep-fried balls of dough dipped in honey. They looked amazing but definitely not in my daily Points allotment. (Incidentally, I’m amused that Helen took almost this exact same picture.)

    Frying

I had the vegetarian “souvlaki,” which was basically a pita with chargrilled vegetables, garlic, and tzatziki. They’d made them up ahead of time so it was cold, which was my only complaint. Otherwise… delish.

    My Souvlaki

Snookums went for the full meat option. Mmm, looks good.

    Proper Souvlaki

    Yum!

    It’s fun being a wannabe food-blogger… 🙂

  • So close!

It’s not enough that I plaster the Snook all over my website… Now I’m getting him into print as well! Last week my coworker Mardi told me about a photo contest the Sydney Morning Herald Radar section was running. You were supposed to send in a “quintessential Sydney moment”, and the winner won a $900 camera phone. I forgot about it until right before the deadline so I decided to just send in a photo from my site. I went with Rodd and Amy eating cheese-on-a-stick at the Easter Show. To my surprise, the editor e-mailed me yesterday to let me know that I was a finalist. I ran to the newsagent this morning to buy the paper and check the results. Unfortunately, I didn’t win. They picked the “serious” picture of the homeless guy instead. Whatever. I still got the Snook in the paper!

  • Sydney Royal Easter Show photos

Snookums and Mr. CornOur photos from the Sydney Royal Easter Show are now up! The Show is basically equivalent to the State Fair around here. There are lots of farm animals and rickety carnival rides and junk food, and everybody spends too much on souvenirs they don’t need. Snookums, Amy, and I headed out there last Saturday for some down-home Aussie country fun…

  • Whales!

I wish I had an office that overlooked the harbour. How cool would it be to look up from the computer and see whales frolicking nearby?

  • NO WAR

Wow! Two guys climbed the Sydney Opera House this morning and painted “NO WAR” on it in giant red letters. While I admire the sentiment, couldn’t they have defaced an unattractive building? Like, say, Kirribilli House?

  • Newtown Mission

I just realized that the beautiful little Newtown Mission Church has a website. It’s really well done. I especially like the random images that appear at the top. This one is a fragment of a huge mural opposite the church. It depicts Martin Luther King Jr. and a view of the Earth from space. This one shows the flower shop near our old apartment and a bit of another large mural, this one a huge map of Africa. It’s on the side of a North African restaurant. I see these things every day but rarely stop to consider how beautiful they can be. It’s funny how seeing just part of an image can make you appreciate the subject more.
